Up, Up, and Away

So our BIG trip is officially under way, and as Teresa recently posted on Facebook we are now officially homeless for the next 3 months.

Yes, we have the ground as our bed and the stars as our roof. Well perhaps not that dramatic, we will be staying in some nice mid-tier hotels and bed & breakfasts, not to mention staying with some lovely friends along the way.

Our first day on the road, or should I say in the air, involved some 3600miles (5800km) from New York to Lima, with stops along the way at Chicago, and Houston.


The day started at 3:30am and didn't end until 10pm that night (one of the down sides of using frequent flier points), so Teresa and I were both glad to get our feet up and some well earned sleep when we arrived in Lima... but needless to say we're wonderfully happy to begin our travels.

The sanctuary of Jaipur

Teresa and I had been in India for about 2 weeks when we made our way from Agra to Jaipur. By that time the sensory overload was beginning to wear more than a little on us both. We had enjoyed seeing the Taj Mahal, but we happy about leaving Agra behind us. And then there was the train ride from Agra to Jaipur. We were very proud that we had managed to negotiate the train system relatively well from Delhi to Agra, but the trip to Jaipur was going to be 4 hours long (instead of 1.5 hrs) and it would be a night time train (instead of daylight), and the train wasn't scheduled to arrive in Jaipur until mid-night. I'm not ashamed to say, that in hindsight, we had bitten off more than we could chew. A Few Essential French Phrases...

We managed to get by in Peru with our bit of Spanish, but our French is sad....beyond sad...it's quite embarrassing how sad it is.  What we discovered right away is that beyond the obvious phrases to learn when visiting any country (like, "Where is the toilete?" and "Help!"), there are some helpful phrases that will simply make your life easier and help us keep our costs down a little. They are : A carafe of water for the table.   Une carafe d' eau pour la table .  The shorter version of this is: Carafe d'eau. Bottled water is a pricey proposition in Paris when your daily budget is 70 euros a day!  We paid 12 euros ($17 US) for a bottle during a meal because we didn't know this handy phrase. Coffee with a treat Cafe Gourmand We actually learned after we arrived and had dinner with Alexandra that this is a great way to have a coffee with a little treat at the end of the meal....

Wow... Machu Picchu is Amazing

The morning mist hugged the mountains like a blanket of fluffy white cotton candy as our Peruvian guide (Felix) led Teresa and I up the ancient stone paths that lead to our high altitude lookout. As the early morning sun worked hard to break through the clouds Teresa and I were given our first glimpse of the famous mountain city of the Incas. The sprawling ruins were in no hurry to open up their secrets to us, and as we both stood there looking over what can only be described as a magical vista, Teresa and I both agreed how this scenic view must have delivered this same thrill over countless mornings throughout the millennia. For the most part we have been blessed with great weather since we arrived in Peru, instead of the cold wintery days we had been expecting, we had been delivered wonderful spring mornings and sunny summer days.
